Che cos’è un fixed binomial e come aiuterà il mio inglese?

Quanti discorsi hai sentito iniziare con le parole ‘Ladies and gentlemen’? Molti, vero? E discorsi che iniziano con le parole ‘Gentlemen and ladies’? Nessuno, lo so.

Allora perché noi usiamo sempre le parole ‘ladies and gentlemen’ nello stesso ordine? Perché formano quello che si chiama un ‘fixed binomial’. ‘Fixed binomials’ o ‘fixed binomial pairs’ sono un accoppiamento di parole, spesso separate da ‘or’, ‘and’ o ‘to’ e che spesso appaiono nello stesso ordine.

Come collocazione, non esiste una regola grammaticale per cui una parola di un ‘fixed binomial’ debba sempre venire prima di un’altra: è solo che suona più naturale in un modo e usarle nell’altro modo sembrerebbe strano a un madrelingua.
