Did you know that many English speaking countries are very diverse when it comes to languages?

If you take a walk in a place like London for example you will hear many languages, dialects and accents. The same is true for other cities all over the globe. Here are some of the most culturally, and therefore linguistically, diverse cities in English speaking countries around the world!

Manchester, UK

There are over 200 languages spoken in Manchester. It’s considered the most linguistically diverse city in Western Europe and possibility the world. Considering its size with a population of only 480,000, the fact that there are so many different languages in this city is quite impressive. Statistics now say around 4 out of 10 people in Manchester speak at least one language other than English.

Toronto, Canada

With a population of 2.79 million people and growing, this popular and multicultural city is also considered one of the safest metropolitan cities in North America. Here you can hear nearly 150 different languages being spoken depending on where you are. Markham, just outside of Toronto, is considered the most diverse city in the country, with a dynamic international population.

San Francisco, California, USA

San Francisco is considered one of the most multicultural cities in the USA. This city has a foreign population of 40%, so you’re likely to hear plenty of foreign languages spoken. There is a very large Chinese community here, making up 25% of the population. The Hispanic community is also large, making up 18% of the population.

New York City, New York, USA

It’s not a surprise New York is on the list. This city has been the gateway for foreign immigrants for many years and you’ll find people from all over the world now calling New York home. There are as many as 800 different languages spoken here! The most popular countries of origin are Jamaica, Haiti, Mexico, China, and the Dominican Republic.

Sydney, Australia

Sydney is another multicultural mecca. Over 65% of the population claim European ancestry, while over 15% of the population speaks a language other than English at home.
